Monkey Ear Flap Hat
I finished this monkey hat pattern a while ago, but with the crazy blog giveaway going on I really couldn't post it until now. This pattern was featured on favecrafts.com as well as a blog post I did for them HERE.
If you can't crochet don't worry. I also have this exact hat up in my etsy shop ready to be purchased and I take custom sizes as well.
It measures 16 inches around when measured, and does not stretch much. It is right on the edge of my chart between 3-6 months and 6-12 months. So it would be a great hat for a baby right in between. Always measure your baby's head to make sure the hat will fit!
Personal and Charity use only please.

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,
Abby
Thanks for offering up such an adorable pattern! I only know some basic crocheting, but plan on working this out. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteHiya there! It took me a while to find out where I got this free pattern from, but i finally found you again! here is my version of your hat, you have made a three year old very very happy ;) Thank you!

I was wondering how you make this in a smaller size? My nephew is just now 3 months.
ReplyDeleteI liked it.
ReplyDeleteBathmate
This pattern is adorable and I am going to try to make it for my baby. How do you attach the ears?
ReplyDeleteYou sew them on with yarn. Use a large yarn/tapestry needle to attach them. Let me know if you still have problems.
ReplyDeleteI finished the hat last night and it is adorable. I took my baby to the store wearing it this morning and almost every person I passed looked at me and smiled. I just wanted to thank you for sharing the pattern and bringing smiles to the world. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI'm very new to crocheting.. infact this is only the second thing I have ever crocheted in my life lol.. I was wondering how do I make it larger? Maybe to fit 9-12 months?
ReplyDeletewhat difficulty is it?
ReplyDeleteThis is beginner/intermediate. If you know all the skills in the need to know list then you will be fine.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you are only 23 and are this amazing at crocheting. Your stitching is gorgeous. Thanks so much for sharing with us!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing! I can't wait to try this for my new nephew. Best wishes to you!
ReplyDeleteI am looking to make this large enough to attach to a bathtowel for my year old grandson. Do you think a larger hook would do the trick? This is as close as I can find without being an actual animal bathtowel.
ReplyDeleteI am really not sure. I have never done anything like that. You may try searching for a tutorial for a crochet hooded bath towel.
ReplyDeleteHOW DO YOU MAKE THE MAGIC CIRCLE?
ReplyDeleteIt is sometimes called the adjustable ring. Here is a tutorial. You would follow it exactly except single crochet instead of double.

I love this, it's adorable, but how would I make it for an adult sized head?
ReplyDeleteI'm a good knitter with a fair bit of experience, but I don't know how to convert the pattern for a bigger head!
Any help would be much appreciated :)
You would need to learn how to keep increasing. I do not have a pattern for this style in an adult size, sorry.
ReplyDeleteTo make it for an adult use a K crochet hook! (Trust me. I just made one) You can leave the pattern just as it is with the bigger hook. I was aiming to make one for my 4 year old daughter (but in white with pink trim and adding bunny ears) but looks like Mommy will have a hat as well lol. I'm pretty confident that the I crochet hook will give me the perfect size for my 4 yr old. And thank you very much to the creator of this pattern : ) I love it just as it is! Can't wait until I'm done with all this bunny making so I can do some monkeys!!
ReplyDelete**note** I wrote the comment above. Wanted to mention that I am fairly new at crocheting and realized that I have been crocheting in the back loops only. Therefore not sure it that would have made and impact on size. I mean, I know using the K hook will make it larger, but not sure if it'll be as large when you do the pattern correctly lol.
ReplyDeleteI am making this for my new nephew. I was wondering how you attached the yarn to the end of the ears...without being noticed?
ReplyDeleteNANCY_DREW I am not sure I understand what you are asking. If you need help please feel free to email me at thecraftytortoise@gmail.com I would love to try to help you figure out your problem.
ReplyDeleteMelissa
After 6 frustrating attempts with other patterns I finally have SUCCESS! :) Thanks SO much for posting this pattern. I made a simple hat in blue for my five-month-old. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteFairly new to crocheting but I am ready to start this project! How do I increase the size to fit a 16 month old? Thanks in advance. Love your site BTW!
ReplyDeleteI finished the hat...and LOVE it! Can't wait to try it on my new nephew. Here is a link to the post on my blog.

I have been crocheting for over 10 years and I just found out that I do alot wrong. Now lets see if I can fix that. Gonna try to make this...wish me well.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this pattern. Very easy! I just began to crochet about a week ago. I found this pattern and used it to make a toddler size monkey hat, an infant brown bear hat and am currently working on a panda bear hat for my 3 year old! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! This was so easy!!! Thanks for posting this. I made one for my newest Grandson for his first Christmas. Now to make one for each of my other 10 Grandkids.

Thank you! Lauaghed out loud when I saw the monkey ears on Etsy......hehe. I have twin granddaughters and my daughter always called them monkeys.......Love it.
ReplyDeleteHey, I love this hat, it's so cute. I am new to crochet and I would like to make one of these for a three year old. How can I make a bigger version?
ReplyDeleteI have a question about the terminology. When doing the ear flaps, what is sc2tog?
ReplyDeletesc2tog is a very common terminology used in crochet patterns. If you look up a crochet term glossary you should find the explanation detailed out, but it is just a way of saying decrease over the next 2 sc's.
ReplyDeleteAdorable pattern!!! I am new to crochet and was wondering... do you ever join the rounds? My hat looked like a giant frisbee :)Thanks for the pattern and hopefully your help, Amy
ReplyDeleteGorgeous looking hat and thank you so much for sharing !, it but having trouble crocheting, I have the same problem as Amy, giant frisbee here.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure why you are having trouble. Here are a few things to check. Are you actually finishing the hat. It should look like a frisbee at first, but when you sc around it will form a hat shape. Also make sure you are working in the round with a stitch marker not joining. Hopefully. This will help.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your pattern!!! So easy and I finished in a few hours! Can't wait to start another one Thank you again your work is great!
ReplyDeleteMade this, minus the ears for my nephew. He looks adorable in it. I made it Navy Blue with a yellow trim. My sister loves it, I am just sad he out grew it so quickly. I am now going to be making one for my sisters friend who isn't due to have her son until the fall! Can't wait to get it started, thanks for such an awesome pattern!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING this pattern!!!
ReplyDeleteI tried 3 times to make this hat and i could not make it come out right, it was so tiny, so i frogged and did a larger hook and it still didnt look right it had a "point" at the top of it, both times as well, it did not lay flat :( I dont know what i was doing wrong but i finally just "winged" it and came up with something similar :)
Sorry you had trouble Tiffani. This is the exact pattern I use all the time to make this item to sell. It should have worked for you. I am glad you were able to wing it!
ReplyDeleteMelissa
I think maybe i was messing up on the row thing, because it came out with a point at the top LOL it didnt lay flat on the top did you ever have that happen when you made it?
ReplyDeleteNo, I have never had that problem. Rows are very common for crochet. As long as you continue around you should get a flat bowl like hat.
ReplyDeletehow many stitches will be inbetween the earflaps?
ReplyDeleteMelissa, Where could I find your chart for head sizes? I have been creating a few patterns on my own but with no little people handy to measure I can be off quite a bit.
