This is the pattern. I warn you it is not perfect and you may have to customize it to fit your own needs.
Made to fit 3-6 months with a finished size of 15 inches around, and 6 inches in length.
Hat:
- make magic ring, sc 8 in ring (8 sts)
- continue around marking the beinging stitch with a stitch marker, 2sc in each sc (16 sts)
- *1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next* repeat around (24)
- *1 sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in next* repeat around
- *1 sc in first 3 sts, 2 sc in next* repeat around
- *1 sc in first 4 sts, 2 sc in next* repeat around
- *1 sc in first 5 sts, 2 sc in next* repeat around
- *1 sc in first 6 sts, 2 sc in next* repeat around
- sc around until you reach approx. 5 inches in length
- join to next st. chain 3, (from this point you will be doing a twisted dc stitch also called a crossed dc stitch) dc in st behind your chain 3. *Skip 1 st, dc, than dc in the skipped stitch* repeat around. Forming a twisted dc row. (look online for a tutorial if you have trouble)
- join. Make a shell border by: chain 1, sc in same stitch, *Skip 2 stitches, 8 treble crochet in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc in next* around. Adjust skipped number of stitches in the end if needed.
Flower:
- make magic circle, sc 5 around
- in each stitch *ch 4, cluster 3 treble crochet, chain 4 join w/ sl st to next st.* repeat around
- Fasten off and tuck in any loose ends.
what size hook and yarn weight did you use?
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. I used an H hook with worsted weight yarn.
ReplyDeleteCan you modify the pattern to make them for older girls?
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is just for 3-6 months. I have a pattern available in my etsy shop that can be made for up to 24 months. I am working on making a pattern for older girls. But for right now I do not have a pattern available.
ReplyDeletethanks! It is cute and quick, perfect for winter gifts.
ReplyDeleteReally cute hat! I thinkit would be precious in various shades of pink for a little girl!
ReplyDeleteWhat is a "magic ring?"
ReplyDeleteIt is a new way to start crocheting in the round. Here is a tutorial http://www.crochetme.com/Dec_Jan_0405/reads_round.html
ReplyDeleteIt is a really cool method.
Hi there! I'm also an Indy girl! Thanks so much for the link to the magic ring. I'm new to crocheting, and I found the tutorial so easy to follow. I have a question, though. The tutorial uses double crochets to create the ring. You pattern starts with single crochet. I'm assuming that you're using single crochet to create the magic ring instead of double crochet, right? Thanks for the pattern; I can't wait to make it!
ReplyDeleteYep! just do the same thing, but start single crocheting instead of double.
ReplyDeleteOK, I have a question. I'm at the point 10 now. If I chain 3 and then dc in the stitch behind my chain 3, when I begin my next part - the twisted crochet, am I then crocheting on top of the 3 that I just chained?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
do you have a 0-3 month pattern for this hat?? I wanted to make it for my daughters first few months. you can email me back at mommyky629@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteAmanda,
ReplyDeleteYou will be crocheting the next part (the twisted crochet) in the next open (empty) stitch. A good video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCGu0PXB3yI
Love the magic ring idea!! That is brilliant! Thanks for posting that link, that will be one of my favorite tricks now. :) I love this hat too!! Just what I was looking for! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLeslie
Made the hat and love it! Only it fits my 2yo! LOL. No idea what I did wrong :)
ReplyDeleteLots of things could cause that! Hook size, yarn weight, stitch tension... just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteHi! Having trouble with the treble crochet shell border. The last shell is overlapping the first one. Is that suppose to be like that or am I doing something wrong? Can't find any tutorial on treble crochet shell border online. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteThis is a free pattern so it is not perfect. The border is not supposed to overlap. I would figure out how many stitches you have left. Then unravel that many shells and redo them slip stitching in the 5th stitch instead of the 4th. That should fix your problem. Please email me if you would like me to explain further or you have more trouble.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I just am not getting the treble crochet border so I made one up, however, I'd like to understand this stitch. Is there anywhere to see a video (pictures work best for me).
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marilyn
I'd make the Flower Baby Hat, and it turned out really cute! I'd like to make one for 24 mos old. Where can I find that pattern? Thank you! Debbie
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your cute pattern! This is my first time making a hat, and I have a question about the measurements. When you say, "sc around until you reach approx. 5 inches in length," what is your definition of length? Do you mean diameter, radius, depth. I was at 5 inches diameter after just one round of sc, and my hat wouldn't even roll and looks very tiny (though I am no good judge of size as I don't have a baby YET). Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable in common crochet pattern terminology yet.
ReplyDeleteLength is measured from the top of the hat to the bottom. Your diameter should be about 15 inches.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your quick response. By the way, you are very excellent with color. I absolutely love all the color combos in your work!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is one of the hardest things to master. I still make bad decisions, (I just don't always post them)
ReplyDeletei don't understand the shell border either and I also cannot find any tutorial on the internet for it when you say join w.sl st in 4th st make 4slst chain 4 join to 4th st back I am lost help
ReplyDeletehttp://crochet.about.com/library/blshells.htm
ReplyDeleteHere is a good tutorial. I made this tutorial a while ago. The shell border on this site is easier to understand. I will change the border instructions soon. If you have more problems email me so I can respond directly to you.
Ok I'm making this hat and it doesn't look any thing like the little brown hat with the pink flower. I looked at the blow up of the pic and it didn't look like there were any twisted double crochets. Also if I just keep single crocheting until it is 5 inches, won't it just be a big flat disc. When do I decrease to make the hat come back in? Joyce
ReplyDeleteJoyce,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry you are having trouble with this pattern. There are twisted stitches right before the shell border (they are hard to see in the photo). I don't know if you have made many hats before, but the way it works is that you increase to make the hat the correct diameter and they you just crochet around and it will make the hat sides. You do not need to decrease to bring the sides back in, they do that naturally when you stop increasing. If you continue to follow the pattern I think you will make it ok. Email me if you need more specific help.
Good luck!
Melissa
Hi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI noticed you already have a lot of questions about the shell border. I as well am having difficulties with the instuctions. Do you make 4 sl sts in the 4th st that you joined with the first sl st?
I have changed the shell border to an easier (and more well known) version. I made this pattern a long time ago and have learned a lot since then. Hope this helps. As always please email me if you have trouble.

I could not find a pattern for up to 24months as you mentioned. Can you direct me to where that would be? My email is brittany_prior@hotmail.com. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI know that you said you used size H hook. What is the gauge? (I usually find that I have to use a different size than suggested.) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am also interested in the pattern for up 2 24 months. My email is jammh@aol.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI do not have a pattern for a larger size for this hat. Sorry for the inconvenience.
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to adjust this pattern to make it for newborn 12-13"?
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern! I had fun making it :-) I too had some issues with the shell but what I did was only put 7 trebles in one spot and then skip 3 stitches. It worked out quite well. I think the pattern will work better for a little older than the 3-6 months but it's super cute.
